But the Lord your God refused to listen to Balaam. He turned the intended curse into a blessing because the Lord your God loves you.

And perhaps the Lord will see that I am being wronged and will bless me because of these curses today.”

For they had not provided the Israelites with food and water in the wilderness. Instead, they hired Balaam to curse them, though our God turned the curse into a blessing.

Truly God is good to Israel, to those whose hearts are pure.

Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.

“I have always loved you,” says the Lord. But you retort, “Really? How have you loved us?” And the Lord replies, “This is how I showed my love for you: I loved your ancestor Jacob,

But the angel of the Lord told Balaam, “Go with these men, but say only what I tell you to say.” So Balaam went on with Balak’s officials.

sent messengers to call Balaam son of Beor, who was living in his native land of Pethor near the Euphrates River. His message said: “Look, a vast horde of people has arrived from Egypt. They cover the face of the earth and are threatening me.

Like a lion, Israel crouches and lies down; like a lioness, who dares to arouse her? Blessed is everyone who blesses you, O Israel, and cursed is everyone who curses you.”

Many of the people of Israel are now enemies of the Good News, and this benefits you Gentiles. Yet they are still the people he loves because he chose their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?

In the words of the Scriptures, “I loved Jacob, but I rejected Esau.”

For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!

The descendants of Esau who live in Seir allowed us to go through their country, and so did the Moabites, who live in Ar. Let us pass through until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.’

Indeed, he loves his people; all his holy ones are in his hands. They follow in his steps and accept his teaching.

Because he loved your ancestors, he chose to bless their descendants, and he personally brought you out of Egypt with a great display of power.

but I would not listen to him. Instead, I made Balaam bless you, and so I rescued you from Balak.
