Then Elijah the prophet wrote Jehoram this letter: “This is what the Lord, the God of your ancestor David, says: You have not followed the good example of your father, Jehoshaphat, or your grandfather King Asa of Judah.

Your might and power were buried with you. The sound of the harp in your palace has ceased. Now maggots are your sheet, and worms your blanket.’

So disaster will overtake you, and you won’t be able to charm it away. Calamity will fall upon you, and you won’t be able to buy your way out. A catastrophe will strike you suddenly, one for which you are not prepared.

All the nations will serve him, his son, and his grandson until his time is up. Then many nations and great kings will conquer and rule over Babylon.

So God has sent this hand to write this message.

This is what these words mean: Mene means ‘numbered’—God has numbered the days of your reign and has brought it to an end.

Suddenly, your debtors will take action. They will turn on you and take all you have, while you stand trembling and helpless.

His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

What’s more, the Lord will hand you and the army of Israel over to the Philistines tomorrow, and you and your sons will be here with me. The Lord will bring down the entire army of Israel in defeat.”
