New Living Translation

The passage of Scripture he had been reading was this: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter. And as a lamb is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.

But as I stood there in silence— not even speaking of good things— the turmoil within me grew worse.

I am silent before you; I won’t say a word, for my punishment is from you.

I was like a lamb being led to the slaughter. I had no idea that they were planning to kill me! “Let’s destroy this man and all his words,” they said. “Let’s cut him down, so his name will be forgotten forever.”

But as for me, Lord, you know my heart. You see me and test my thoughts. Drag these people away like sheep to be butchered! Set them aside to be slaughtered!

“I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams and goats to be sacrificed.

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him.

(As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”)

I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.

It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
