But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food.

I helped those without hope, and they blessed me. And I caused the widows’ hearts to sing for joy.

“Have I refused to help the poor, or crushed the hopes of widows?

When you go to war, your people will serve you willingly. You are arrayed in holy garments, and your strength will be renewed each day like the morning dew.

May there be abundant grain throughout the land, flourishing even on the hilltops. May the fruit trees flourish like the trees of Lebanon, and may the people thrive like grass in a field.

Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.

The time is coming when Jacob’s descendants will take root. Israel will bud and blossom and fill the whole earth with fruit!

There will be joy and songs of thanksgiving, and I will multiply my people, not diminish them; I will honor them, not despise them.

“At that time I will put you on trial. I am eager to witness against all sorcerers and adulterers and liars. I will speak against those who cheat employees of their wages, who oppress widows and orphans, or who deprive the foreigners living among you of justice, for these people do not fear me,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.

However, some of the believers who went to Antioch from Cyprus and Cyrene began preaching to the Gentiles about the Lord Jesus.

When he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. Both of them stayed there with the church for a full year, teaching large crowds of people. (It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.)

So the believers in Antioch decided to send relief to the brothers and sisters in Judea, everyone giving as much as they could.

Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.

They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of men who believed now totaled about 5,000.

Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women.

“We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man’s name!” he said. “Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”

So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program.

So God’s message continued to spread. The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too.

He debated with some Greek-speaking Jews, but they tried to murder him.

So Peter returned with them; and as soon as he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room. The room was filled with widows who were weeping and showing him the coats and other clothes Dorcas had made for them.

He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then he called in the widows and all the believers, and he presented her to them alive.

If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well.

And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.

Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I.

“Every third year you must offer a special tithe of your crops. In this year of the special tithe you must give your tithes to the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows, so that they will have enough to eat in your towns.

I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law.

Take care of any widow who has no one else to care for her.

A widow who is put on the list for support must be a woman who is at least sixty years old and was faithful to her husband.

Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters.

Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him.

Don’t grumble about each other, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. For look—the Judge is standing at the door!
