Acts 5:21

New Living Translation

So at daybreak the apostles entered the Temple, as they were told, and immediately began teaching. When the high priest and his officials arrived, they convened the high council—the full assembly of the elders of Israel. Then they sent for the apostles to be brought from the jail for trial.

He could instruct the king’s aides as he pleased and teach the king’s advisers.

But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.

At daybreak all the elders of the people assembled, including the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. Jesus was led before this high council,

“Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”

but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them.

For you are to be his witness, telling everyone what you have seen and heard.

The high priest and the whole council of elders can testify that this is so. For I received letters from them to our Jewish brothers in Damascus, authorizing me to bring the followers of the Way from there to Jerusalem, in chains, to be punished.

The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.

Then they brought the apostles before the high council, where the high priest confronted them.

But one member, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, who was an expert in religious law and respected by all the people, stood up and ordered that the men be sent outside the council chamber for a while.

The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.
