It was three months after the shipwreck that we set sail on another ship that had wintered at the island—an Alexandrian ship with the twin gods as its figurehead.

“Gather together and come, you fugitives from surrounding nations. What fools they are who carry around their wooden idols and pray to gods that cannot save!

The sailors were awestruck by the Lord’s great power, and they offered him a sacrifice and vowed to serve him.

Fearing for their lives, the desperate sailors shouted to their gods for help and threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship. But all this time Jonah was sound asleep down in the hold.

Afterward they traveled from town to town across the entire island until finally they reached Paphos, where they met a Jewish sorcerer, a false prophet named Bar-Jesus.

There the commanding officer found an Egyptian ship from Alexandria that was bound for Italy, and he put us on board.

As a result we were showered with honors, and when the time came to sail, people supplied us with everything we would need for the trip.

Our first stop was Syracuse, where we stayed three days.

But one day some men from the Synagogue of Freed Slaves, as it was called, started to debate with him. They were Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and the province of Asia.

So, what about eating meat that has been offered to idols? Well, we all know that an idol is not really a god and that there is only one God.
