How can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone born of a woman be pure?

Or ‘I don’t know what evil I have done—tell me. If I have done wrong, I will stop at once’?

“No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.

Then when you call, the Lord will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply. “Remove the heavy yoke of oppression. Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors!

Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.

God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

The crowds asked, “What should we do?”

“Friends, why are you doing this? We are merely human beings—just like you! We have come to bring you the Good News that you should turn from these worthless things and turn to the living God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them.

She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.”

So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.

Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”

“I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ “And the Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything you are to do.’

Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.
