I am not sending you to a foreign people whose language you cannot understand.

The people gave him a great ovation, shouting, “It’s the voice of a god, not of a man!”

They decided that Barnabas was the Greek god Zeus and that Paul was Hermes, since he was the chief speaker.

When the apostles learned of it, they fled to the region of Lycaonia—to the towns of Lystra and Derbe and the surrounding area.

The people waited for him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw that he wasn’t harmed, they changed their minds and decided he was a god.

Everyone, from the least to the greatest, often spoke of him as “the Great One—the Power of God.”
