“No, Lord,” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.”

“Oh no, my lord!” Lot begged.

Never! Only the men may go and worship the Lord, since that is what you requested.” And Pharaoh threw them out of the palace.

Then I said, “O Sovereign Lord, must I be defiled by using human dung? For I have never been defiled before. From the time I was a child until now I have never eaten any animal that died of sickness or was killed by other animals. I have never eaten any meat forbidden by the law.”

The priests may not eat meat from any bird or animal that dies a natural death or that dies after being attacked by another animal.

But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.

“You must therefore make a distinction between ceremonially clean and unclean animals, and between clean and unclean birds. You must not defile yourselves by eating any unclean animal or bird or creature that scurries along the ground. I have identified them as being unclean for you.

It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”

But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!”

“But the others replied, ‘We don’t have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.’

Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”

They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating.

But Elizabeth said, “No! His name is John!”

“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?

Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.”

Peter told them, “You know it is against our laws for a Jewish man to enter a Gentile home like this or to associate with you. But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean.

“‘Who are you, lord?’ I asked. “And the voice replied, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, the one you are persecuting.’

“Who are you, lord?” Saul asked. And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting!
