They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king and all the people wept at his graveside.

They mourned and wept and fasted all day for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the Lord’s army and the nation of Israel, because they had died by the sword that day.

The king was overcome with emotion. He went up to the room over the gateway and burst into tears. And as he went, he cried, “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! O Absalom, my son, my son.”

So David ordered his young men to kill them, and they did. They cut off their hands and feet and hung their bodies beside the pool in Hebron. Then they took Ishbosheth’s head and buried it in Abner’s tomb in Hebron.

If so, I should be punished by the judges, for it would mean I had denied the God of heaven.

“Have I ever rejoiced when disaster struck my enemies, or become excited when harm came their way?

Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall; don’t be happy when they stumble.

they wept until they could weep no more.
