Now Joab was the commander of the army of Israel. Benaiah son of Jehoiada was captain of the king’s bodyguard.

Deeds like these made Benaiah as famous as the Three mightiest warriors.

Other members of the Thirty included: Asahel, Joab’s brother; Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem;

along with a large amount of bronze from Hadadezer’s towns of Tebah and Berothai.

This was the Benaiah who commanded David’s elite military group known as the Thirty. His son Ammizabad was his chief officer.

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

“But sir,” Ahimelech replied, “is anyone among all your servants as faithful as David, your son-in-law? Why, he is the captain of your bodyguard and a highly honored member of your household!
