Once again the Philistines were at war with Israel. And when David and his men were in the thick of battle, David became weak and exhausted.

Ishbi-benob was a descendant of the giants; his bronze spearhead weighed more than seven pounds, and he was armed with a new sword. He had cornered David and was about to kill him.

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of Israel, they mobilized all their forces to capture him. But David was told they were coming, so he went into the stronghold.

But after a while the Philistines returned and again spread out across the valley of Rephaim.

So David did what the Lord commanded, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.

After this, David defeated and subdued the Philistines by conquering Gath, their largest town.

After this, war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer. As they fought, Sibbecai from Hushah killed Saph, a descendant of the giants, and so the Philistines were subdued.

Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me.

And now, in my old age, don’t set me aside. Don’t abandon me when my strength is failing.

My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.

Remember him before your legs—the guards of your house—start to tremble; and before your shoulders—the strong men—stoop. Remember him before your teeth—your few remaining servants—stop grinding; and before your eyes—the women looking through the windows—see dimly.
