New Living Translation

“But there are ten tribes in Israel,” the others replied. “So we have ten times as much right to the king as you do. What right do you have to treat us with such contempt? Weren’t we the first to speak of bringing him back to be our king again?” The argument continued back and forth, and the men of Judah spoke even more harshly than the men of Israel.

Then Amasa convinced all the men of Judah, and they responded unanimously. They sent word to the king, “Return to us, and bring back all who are with you.”

And throughout all the tribes of Israel there was much discussion and argument going on. The people were saying, “The king rescued us from our enemies and saved us from the Philistines, but Absalom chased him out of the country.

There happened to be a troublemaker there named Sheba son of Bicri, a man from the tribe of Benjamin. Sheba blew a ram’s horn and began to chant: “Down with the dynasty of David! We have no interest in the son of Jesse. Come on, you men of Israel, back to your homes!”

Then David said to Abishai, “Sheba son of Bicri is going to hurt us more than Absalom did. Quick, take my troops and chase after him before he gets into a fortified town where we can’t reach him.”

Then all the tribes of Israel went to David at Hebron and told him, “We are your own flesh and blood.

When all Israel realized that the king had refused to listen to them, they responded, “Down with the dynasty of David! We have no interest in the son of Jesse. Back to your homes, O Israel! Look out for your own house, O David!” So the people of Israel returned home.

Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.

A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.

Starting a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so stop before a dispute breaks out.

An offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city. Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with bars.

Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another.

Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.

Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.

Then the people of Ephraim asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us this way? Why didn’t you send for us when you first went out to fight the Midianites?” And they argued heatedly with Gideon.

God sent a spirit that stirred up trouble between Abimelech and the leading citizens of Shechem, and they revolted.
