The king also told Zadok the priest, “Look, here is my plan. You and Abiathar should return quietly to the city with your son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan.

and they will send their sons Ahimaaz and Jonathan to tell me what is going on.”

Jonathan and Ahimaaz had been staying at En-rogel so as not to be seen entering and leaving the city. Arrangements had been made for a servant girl to bring them the message they were to take to King David.

Then Zadok’s son Ahimaaz said, “Let me run to the king with the good news that the Lord has rescued him from his enemies.”

The next morning the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, who was David’s seer. This was the message:

And while he was still speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. “Come in,” Adonijah said to him, “for you are a good man. You must have good news.”

Ahimaaz, in Naphtali. (He was married to Basemath, another of Solomon’s daughters.)

All these were the sons of Heman, the king’s seer, for God had honored him with fourteen sons and three daughters.

Ahitub was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Ahimaaz.

But the servant said, “I’ve just thought of something! There is a man of God who lives here in this town. He is held in high honor by all the people because everything he says comes true. Let’s go find him. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.”

(In those days if people wanted a message from God, they would say, “Let’s go and ask the seer,” for prophets used to be called seers.)
