Then David got up from the ground, washed himself, put on lotions, and changed his clothes. He went to the Tabernacle and worshiped the Lord. After that, he returned to the palace and was served food and ate.

When David saw them whispering, he realized what had happened. “Is the child dead?” he asked. “Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.”

His advisers were amazed. “We don’t understand you,” they told him. “While the child was still living, you wept and refused to eat. But now that the child is dead, you have stopped your mourning and are eating again.”

So he sent for a woman from Tekoa who had a reputation for great wisdom. He said to her, “Pretend you are in mourning; wear mourning clothes and don’t put on lotions. Act like a woman who has been mourning for the dead for a long time.

Now Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, came down from Jerusalem to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet, trimmed his beard, or washed his clothes since the day the king left Jerusalem.

They brought the Ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the special tent David had prepared for it. And David sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings to the Lord.

Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed, “Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?

Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship.

But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.

Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.

The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

I am silent before you; I won’t say a word, for my punishment is from you.

Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker,

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

Wear fine clothes, with a splash of cologne!

But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face.

You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.

Now do as I tell you—take a bath and put on perfume and dress in your nicest clothes. Then go to the threshing floor, but don’t let Boaz see you until he has finished eating and drinking.

But now, please forgive my sin and come back with me so that I may worship the Lord.”

So Samuel finally agreed and went back with him, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
