They mourned and wept and fasted all day for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the Lord’s army and the nation of Israel, because they had died by the sword that day.

David had refused to eat anything on the day of the funeral, and now everyone begged him to eat. But David had made a vow, saying, “May God strike me and even kill me if I eat anything before sundown.”

Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall; don’t be happy when they stumble.

If only my head were a pool of water and my eyes a fountain of tears, I would weep day and night for all my people who have been slaughtered.

You drink wine by the bowlful and perfume yourselves with fragrant lotions. You care nothing about the ruin of your nation.

But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

Who is weak without my feeling that weakness? Who is led astray, and I do not burn with anger?

Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.

Then they took their bones and buried them beneath the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted for seven days.

So Saul, his three sons, his armor bearer, and his troops all died together that same day.
