One day Amaziah sent messengers with this challenge to Israel’s king Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz and grandson of Jehu: “Come and meet me in battle!”

“Take them alive,” Ben-hadad commanded, “whether they have come for peace or for war.”

The rest of the events in Jehoash’s reign and everything he did, including the extent of his power and his war with King Amaziah of Judah, are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Israel.

But Amaziah refused to listen, so King Jehoash of Israel mobilized his army against King Amaziah of Judah. The two armies drew up their battle lines at Beth-shemesh in Judah.

When King Amaziah returned from slaughtering the Edomites, he brought with him idols taken from the people of Seir. He set them up as his own gods, bowed down in front of them, and offered sacrifices to them!

Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.

Starting a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so stop before a dispute breaks out.

Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating.

Plans succeed through good counsel; don’t go to war without wise advice.

don’t be in a hurry to go to court. For what will you do in the end if your neighbor deals you a shameful defeat?

If I were in charge here, I would get rid of Abimelech. I would say to him, ‘Get some soldiers, and come out and fight!’”
