1 Samuel 8:7

“Do everything they say to you,” the Lord replied, “for they are rejecting me, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer.

Then Moses added, “The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening and bread to satisfy you in the morning, for he has heard all your complaints against him. What have we done? Yes, your complaints are against the Lord, not against us.”

I will send them great trouble— all the things they feared. For when I called, they did not answer. When I spoke, they did not listen. They deliberately sinned before my very eyes and chose to do what they know I despise.”

I told them that every Hebrew slave must be freed after serving six years. But your ancestors paid no attention to me.

“Son of man,” he said, “I am sending you to the nation of Israel, a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me. They and their ancestors have been rebelling against me to this very day.

But the people of Israel won’t listen to you any more than they listen to me! For the whole lot of them are hard-hearted and stubborn.

That night God came to Balaam and told him, “Since these men have come for you, get up and go with them. But do only what I tell you to do.”

“Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me.

Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.”

But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’

And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’”

I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message.

But Gideon replied, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son. The Lord will rule over you!

But though I have rescued you from your misery and distress, you have rejected your God today and have said, ‘No, we want a king instead!’ Now, therefore, present yourselves before the Lord by tribes and clans.”

Then Samuel addressed all Israel: “I have done as you asked and given you a king.

“But when you were afraid of Nahash, the king of Ammon, you came to me and said that you wanted a king to reign over you, even though the Lord your God was already your king.

and the Lord replied, “Do as they say, and give them a king.” Then Samuel agreed and sent the people home.

Ever since I brought them from Egypt they have continually abandoned me and followed other gods. And now they are giving you the same treatment.
