And there he built an altar and named it El-Elohe-Israel.

Jacob built an altar there and named the place El-bethel (which means “God of Bethel”), because God had appeared to him there when he was fleeing from his brother, Esau.

Then Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first of the altars he built to the Lord.

Then Samuel went home to Ramah, and Saul returned to his house at Gibeah of Saul.

Then Elkanah returned home to Ramah without Samuel. And the boy served the Lord by assisting Eli the priest.

Meanwhile, Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him. He was buried in Ramah, his hometown. And Saul had banned from the land of Israel all mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead.

Finally, all the elders of Israel met at Ramah to discuss the matter with Samuel.

“Yes,” they replied. “Stay right on this road. He is at the town gates. He has just arrived to take part in a public sacrifice up at the place of worship.
