But David said, “No, my brothers! Don’t be selfish with what the Lord has given us. He has kept us safe and helped us defeat the band of raiders that attacked us.

“Please, my brothers,” he begged, “don’t do such a wicked thing.

Then they will worship their nets and burn incense in front of them. “These nets are the gods who have made us rich!” they will claim.

“Brothers and esteemed fathers,” Paul said, “listen to me as I offer my defense.”

This was Stephen’s reply: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me. Our glorious God appeared to our ancestor Abraham in Mesopotamia before he settled in Haran.

When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.

He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’

Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.

The old man stepped outside to talk to them. “No, my brothers, don’t do such an evil thing. For this man is a guest in my house, and such a thing would be shameful.

The Lord makes some poor and others rich; he brings some down and lifts others up.

But some evil troublemakers among David’s men said, “They didn’t go with us, so they can’t have any of the plunder we recovered. Give them their wives and children, and tell them to be gone.”

Who will listen when you talk like this? We share and share alike—those who go to battle and those who guard the equipment.”

Then David asked the Lord, “Should I chase after this band of raiders? Will I catch them?” And the Lord told him, “Yes, go after them. You will surely recover everything that was taken from you!”
