“Why were you not afraid to kill the Lord’s anointed one?” David asked.

if I have betrayed a friend or plundered my enemy without cause,

But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

Now testify against me in the presence of the Lord and before his anointed one. Whose ox or donkey have I stolen? Have I ever cheated any of you? Have I ever oppressed you? Have I ever taken a bribe and perverted justice? Tell me and I will make right whatever I have done wrong.”

He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king. I shouldn’t attack the Lord’s anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.”

David came out and shouted after him, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked around, David bowed low before him.

Thank God for your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murder and from carrying out vengeance with my own hands.

The Lord gives his own reward for doing good and for being loyal, and I refused to kill you even when the Lord placed you in my power, for you are the Lord’s anointed one.

“No!” David said. “Don’t kill him. For who can remain innocent after attacking the Lord’s anointed one?
