If someone sins against another person, God can mediate for the guilty party. But if someone sins against the Lord, who can intercede?” But Eli’s sons wouldn’t listen to their father, for the Lord was already planning to put them to death.

But the Lord considered it evil for Onan to deny a child to his dead brother. So the Lord took Onan’s life, too.

“If someone wrongs another person and is required to take an oath of innocence in front of your altar in this Temple,

then hear from heaven and judge between your servants—the accuser and the accused. Punish the guilty as they deserve. Acquit the innocent because of their innocence.

So the king paid no attention to the people. This turn of events was the will of God, for it fulfilled the Lord’s message to Jeroboam son of Nebat through the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh.

But the king interrupted him and said, “Since when have I made you the king’s counselor? Be quiet now before I have you killed!” So the prophet stopped with this warning: “I know that God has determined to destroy you because you have done this and have refused to accept my counsel.”

If only there were a mediator between us, someone who could bring us together.

You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering.

Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.

A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline; a mocker refuses to listen to correction.

Whoever abandons the right path will be severely disciplined; whoever hates correction will die.

Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery.

A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up.

“But those who brazenly violate the Lord’s will, whether native-born Israelites or foreigners, have blasphemed the Lord, and they must be cut off from the community.

and impartial in your judgments. Hear the cases of those who are poor as well as those who are rich. Don’t be afraid of anyone’s anger, for the decision you make is God’s decision. Bring me any cases that are too difficult for you, and I will handle them.’

“But King Sihon of Heshbon refused to allow us to pass through, because the Lord your God made Sihon stubborn and defiant so he could help you defeat him, as he has now done.

For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.

Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins.

There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies.

Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.

For the Lord hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites. So they were completely destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

So I have vowed that the sins of Eli and his sons will never be forgiven by sacrifices or offerings.”
