When Saul’s men said these things to David, he replied, “How can a poor man from a humble family afford the bride price for the daughter of a king?”

So Jacob worked seven years to pay for Rachel. But his love for her was so strong that it seemed to him but a few days.

No matter what dowry or gift you demand, I will gladly pay it—just give me the girl as my wife.”

I am insignificant and despised, but I don’t forget your commandments.

The poor are despised even by their neighbors, while the rich have many “friends.”

To flatter friends is to lay a trap for their feet.

See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.

“Who am I, and what is my family in Israel that I should be the king’s son-in-law?” David exclaimed. “My father’s family is nothing!”

Then Saul told his men to say to David, “The king really likes you, and so do we. Why don’t you accept the king’s offer and become his son-in-law?”

When Saul’s men reported this back to the king,

Saul replied, “But I’m only from the tribe of Benjamin, the smallest tribe in Israel, and my family is the least important of all the families of that tribe! Why are you talking like this to me?”
