Your king is now your leader. I stand here before you—an old, gray-haired man—and my sons serve you. I have served as your leader from the time I was a boy to this very day.

Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me.

Now Eli was very old, but he was aware of what his sons were doing to the people of Israel. He knew, for instance, that his sons were seducing the young women who assisted at the entrance of the Tabernacle.

So why do you scorn my sacrifices and offerings? Why do you give your sons more honor than you give me—for you and they have become fat from the best offerings of my people Israel!

And the Lord came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.”

I have warned him that judgment is coming upon his family forever, because his sons are blaspheming God and he hasn’t disciplined them.

But Eli called out to him, “Samuel, my son.” “Here I am,” Samuel replied.

As Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons to be judges over Israel.

“We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.”

But they were not like their father, for they were greedy for money. They accepted bribes and perverted justice.

“Look,” they told him, “you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have.”
