When Solomon finished making these prayers and petitions to the Lord, he stood up in front of the altar of the Lord, where he had been kneeling with his hands raised toward heaven.

When she arrived, she saw the newly crowned king standing in his place of authority by the pillar, as was the custom at times of coronation. The commanders and trumpeters were surrounding him, and people from all over the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. At the time of the sacrifice, I stood up from where I had sat in mourning with my clothes torn. I fell to my knees and lifted my hands to the Lord my God.

“If only you would prepare your heart and lift up your hands to him in prayer!

Listen to my prayer for mercy as I cry out to you for help, as I lift my hands toward your holy sanctuary.

I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer.

When the people saw the cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, they would stand and bow down in front of their own tents.

“All right,” Moses replied. “As soon as I leave the city, I will lift my hands and pray to the Lord. Then the thunder and hail will stop, and you will know that the earth belongs to the Lord.

So Moses left Pharaoh’s court and went out of the city. When he lifted his hands to the Lord, the thunder and hail stopped, and the downpour ceased.

When you lift up your hands in prayer, I will not look. Though you offer many prayers, I will not listen, for your hands are covered with the blood of innocent victims.

In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.
