New Living Translation

“Concerning this Temple you are building, if you keep all my decrees and regulations and obey all my commands, I will fulfill through you the promise I made to your father, David.

“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord has declared: Are you the one to build a house for me to live in?

He had warned Solomon specifically about worshiping other gods, but Solomon did not listen to the Lord’s command.

And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.”

Then the Lord gave this message to Solomon:

“And now, O Lord, God of Israel, carry out the additional promise you made to your servant David, my father. For you said to him, ‘If your descendants guard their behavior and faithfully follow me as you have done, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.’

He is the one who will build a Temple to honor my name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will secure the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’

“And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.

If your descendants obey the terms of my covenant and the laws that I teach them, then your royal line will continue forever and ever.”

But I will be merciful only if you stop your evil thoughts and deeds and start treating each other with justice;

“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: If you follow my ways and carefully serve me, then you will be given authority over my Temple and its courtyards. I will let you walk among these others standing here.

But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it.
