At that time the people of Israel sacrificed their offerings at local places of worship, for a temple honoring the name of the Lord had not yet been built.

For they also built for themselves pagan shrines and set up sacred pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.

Although the pagan shrines were not removed, Asa’s heart remained completely faithful to the Lord throughout his life.

Jehoshaphat was a good king, following the example of his father, Asa. He did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight. During his reign, however, he failed to remove all the pagan shrines, and the people still offered sacrifices and burned incense there.

Jehoshaphat also made peace with the king of Israel.

“You know that my father, David, was not able to build a Temple to honor the name of the Lord his God because of the many wars waged against him by surrounding nations. He could not build until the Lord gave him victory over all his enemies.

One day King Joash said to the priests, “Collect all the money brought as a sacred offering to the Lord’s Temple, whether it is a regular assessment, a payment of vows, or a voluntary gift.

Although the pagan shrines were not removed from Israel, Asa’s heart remained completely faithful throughout his life.

However, the people still sacrificed at the pagan shrines, though only to the Lord their God.

They angered God by building shrines to other gods; they made him jealous with their idols.

I will destroy your pagan shrines and knock down your places of worship. I will leave your lifeless corpses piled on top of your lifeless idols, and I will despise you.

Be careful not to sacrifice your burnt offerings just anywhere you like.

“Yes,” they replied. “Stay right on this road. He is at the town gates. He has just arrived to take part in a public sacrifice up at the place of worship.
