New Living Translation

Then the king said to Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your home in Anathoth. You deserve to die, but I will not kill you now, because you carried the Ark of the Sovereign Lord for David my father and you shared all his hardships.”

David was furious. “As surely as the Lord lives,” he vowed, “any man who would do such a thing deserves to die!

Today he has sacrificed many cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and he has invited all the king’s sons to attend the celebration. He also invited the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. They are feasting and drinking with him and shouting, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’

Adonijah took Joab son of Zeruiah and Abiathar the priest into his confidence, and they agreed to help him become king.

Then the king appointed Benaiah to command the army in place of Joab, and he installed Zadok the priest to take the place of Abiathar.

Scream in terror, you people of Gallim! Shout out a warning to Laishah. Oh, poor Anathoth!

These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests from the town of Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.

And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”

“You have stayed with me in my time of trial.

Have you experienced so much for nothing? Surely it was not in vain, was it?

Anathoth, and Almon—four towns.

You will watch with envy as I pour out prosperity on the people of Israel. But no members of your family will ever live out their days.

This isn’t good at all! I swear by the Lord that you and your men deserve to die, because you failed to protect your master, the Lord’s anointed! Look around! Where are the king’s spear and the jug of water that were beside his head?”
