While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel, one of David’s counselors who lived in Giloh. Soon many others also joined Absalom, and the conspiracy gained momentum.

Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, will be there. Tell them about the plans being made in the king’s palace,

Now Joab was the commander of the army of Israel. Benaiah son of Jehoiada was captain of the king’s bodyguard.

Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar. Joab was commander of the king’s army.

The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.
