Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking, “Why are you doing that?” Adonijah had been born next after Absalom, and he was very handsome.

Now Absalom was praised as the most handsome man in all Israel. He was flawless from head to foot.

“How can you possibly ask me to give Abishag to Adonijah?” King Solomon demanded. “You might as well ask me to give him the kingdom! You know that he is my older brother, and that he has Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah on his side.”

The third was Absalom, whose mother was Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur. The fourth was Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith.

A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness, but physical discipline will drive it far away.

To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child.

So they found him and brought him out, and he stood head and shoulders above anyone else.

I have warned him that judgment is coming upon his family forever, because his sons are blaspheming God and he hasn’t disciplined them.

His son Saul was the most handsome man in Israel—head and shoulders taller than anyone else in the land.
