Have I not wept for him who was in trouble? Has not my soul grieved for the poor?

Those who sit in the gate speak against me, And I am the song of the drunkards.

‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?’ “In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, And exploit all your laborers.

Is it a fast that I have chosen, A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, And to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this a fast, And an acceptable day to the Lord?

“This shall be a statute forever for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you.

It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever.

If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you.
