You rebuke the proud—the cursed, Who stray from Your commandments.

“But they and our fathers acted proudly, Hardened their necks, And did not heed Your commandments.

And testified against them, That You might bring them back to Your law. Yet they acted proudly, And did not heed Your commandments, But sinned against Your judgments, ‘Which if a man does, he shall live by them.’ And they shrugged their shoulders, Stiffened their necks, And would not hear.

With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!

The wicked have laid a snare for me, Yet I have not strayed from Your precepts.

You reject all those who stray from Your statutes, For their deceit is falsehood.

Let the proud be ashamed, For they treated me wrongfully with falsehood; But I will meditate on Your precepts.

Though the Lord is on high, Yet He regards the lowly; But the proud He knows from afar.

So Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; for in the very thing in which they behaved proudly, He was above them.”

Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Lord has performed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, that He will say, “I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.”

Who gave Jacob for plunder, and Israel to the robbers? Was it not the Lord, He against whom we have sinned? For they would not walk in His ways, Nor were they obedient to His law.

Therefore I will profane the princes of the sanctuary; I will give Jacob to the curse, And Israel to reproaches.

“As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not listen to you!

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down.

“For behold, the day is coming, Burning like an oven, And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up,” Says the Lord of hosts, “That will leave them neither root nor branch.

For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),

“But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”

Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”
