Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Though the Lord is on high, Yet He regards the lowly; But the proud He knows from afar.

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.

The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; My desire shall be satisfied on them. I will draw my sword, My hand shall destroy them.’

We shall find all kinds of precious possessions, We shall fill our houses with spoil;

Cast in your lot among us, Let us all have one purse”—

For it is better that he say to you, “Come up here,” Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom your eyes have seen.

A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble.

I will send him against an ungodly nation, And against the people of My wrath I will give him charge, To seize the spoil, to take the prey, And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

You have multiplied the nation And increased its joy; They rejoice before You According to the joy of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil: To every man a girl or two; For Sisera, plunder of dyed garments, Plunder of garments embroidered and dyed, Two pieces of dyed embroidery for the neck of the looter?’
