The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son makes a glad father, But a foolish son is the grief of his mother.

He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five.

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.

A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish man despises his mother.

He who begets a scoffer does so to his sorrow, And the father of a fool has no joy.

A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her who bore him.

A foolish son is the ruin of his father, And the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.

These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied:

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, That I may answer him who reproaches me.

The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul.

Whoever loves wisdom makes his father rejoice, But a companion of harlots wastes his wealth.

And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs.

And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.
