Her heads judge for a bribe, Her priests teach for pay, And her prophets divine for money. Yet they lean on the Lord, and say, “Is not the Lord among us? No harm can come upon us.”

A wicked man accepts a bribe behind the back To pervert the ways of justice.

Your princes are rebellious, And companions of thieves; Everyone loves bribes, And follows after rewards. They do not defend the fatherless, Nor does the cause of the widow come before them.

For they call themselves after the holy city, And lean on the God of Israel; The Lord of hosts is His name:

Who justify the wicked for a bribe, And take away justice from the righteous man!

Yes, they are greedy dogs Which never have enough. And they are shepherds Who cannot understand; They all look to their own way, Every one for his own gain, From his own territory.

They continually say to those who despise Me, ‘The Lord has said, “You shall have peace” ’; And to everyone who walks according to the dictates of his own heart, they say, ‘No evil shall come upon you.’ ”

So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord.

They have lied about the Lord, And said, “It is not He. Neither will evil come upon us, Nor shall we see sword or famine.

“Because from the least of them even to the greatest of them, Everyone is given to covetousness; And from the prophet even to the priest, Everyone deals falsely.

Do not trust in these lying words, saying, ‘The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are these.’

Therefore I will give their wives to others, And their fields to those who will inherit them; Because from the least even to the greatest Everyone is given to covetousness; From the prophet even to the priest Everyone deals falsely.

In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take usury and increase; you have made profit from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten Me,” says the Lord God.

Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood, to destroy people, and to get dishonest gain.

“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God to the shepherds: “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks?

Their drink is rebellion, They commit harlotry continually. Her rulers dearly love dishonor.

They eat up the sin of My people; They set their heart on their iniquity.

Seek good and not evil, That you may live; So the Lord God of hosts will be with you, As you have spoken.

All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword, Who say, ‘The calamity shall not overtake nor confront us.’

Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets Who make my people stray; Who chant “Peace” While they chew with their teeth, But who prepare war against him Who puts nothing into their mouths:

That they may successfully do evil with both hands— The prince asks for gifts, The judge seeks a bribe, And the great man utters his evil desire; So they scheme together.

Her princes in her midst are roaring lions; Her judges are evening wolves That leave not a bone till morning.

Her prophets are insolent, treacherous people; Her priests have polluted the sanctuary, They have done violence to the law.

“Who is there even among you who would shut the doors, So that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain? I have no pleasure in you,” Says the Lord of hosts, “Nor will I accept an offering from your hands.

“Therefore I also have made you contemptible and base Before all the people, Because you have not kept My ways But have shown partiality in the law.”

Then Moses was very angry, and said to the Lord, “Do not respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, nor have I hurt one of them.”

So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak.

and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;

whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain.

Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;

Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.
