Matthew 16:1

Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.

Others, testing Him, sought from Him a sign from heaven.

Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them,

Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”

For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom;

This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.

Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation,

Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,

But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test Me?

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Then some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him; and they asked Him, saying:

Shall we pay, or shall we not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why do you test Me? Bring Me a denarius that I may see it.”

The Pharisees came and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” testing Him.

On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate,

saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.

The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test Me, you hypocrites?

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk.

The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him.

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

Answer a fool according to his folly, Lest he be wise in his own eyes.
