Woe to you who are full, For you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, For you shall mourn and weep.

Even in laughter the heart may sorrow, And the end of mirth may be grief.

Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the Lord?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God.

I said of laughter—“Madness!”; and of mirth, “What does it accomplish?”

Sorrow is better than laughter, For by a sad countenance the heart is made better.

For like the crackling of thorns under a pot, So is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.

But they also have erred through wine, And through intoxicating drink are out of the way; The priest and the prophet have erred through intoxicating drink, They are swallowed up by wine, They are out of the way through intoxicating drink; They err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Behold, My servants shall eat, But you shall be hungry; Behold, My servants shall drink, But you shall be thirsty; Behold, My servants shall rejoice, But you shall be ashamed;

They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and curse their king and their God, and look upward.

And he shall snatch on the right hand And be hungry; He shall devour on the left hand And not be satisfied; Every man shall eat the flesh of his own arm.

I will turn your feasts into mourning, And all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist, And baldness on every head; I will make it like mourning for an only son, And its end like a bitter day.

For while tangled like thorns, And while drunken like drunkards, They shall be devoured like stubble fully dried.

But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out.

“But woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation.

Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets.

And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead.

neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.

Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—

Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, And the hungry have ceased to hunger. Even the barren has borne seven, And she who has many children has become feeble.
