The precious sons of Zion, Valuable as fine gold, How they are regarded as clay pots, The work of the hands of the potter!

And He shall break it like the breaking of the potter’s vessel, Which is broken in pieces; He shall not spare. So there shall not be found among its fragments A shard to take fire from the hearth, Or to take water from the cistern.”

Thus says the Lord: “Go and get a potter’s earthen flask, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests.

and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, which cannot be made whole again; and they shall bury them in Tophet till there is no place to bury.

“Is this man Coniah a despised, broken idol— A vessel in which is no pleasure? Why are they cast out, he and his descendants, And cast into a land which they do not know?

“Young and old lie On the ground in the streets; My virgins and my young men Have fallen by the sword; You have slain them in the day of Your anger, You have slaughtered and not pitied.

Princes were hung up by their hands, And elders were not respected.

Israel is swallowed up; Now they are among the Gentiles Like a vessel in which is no pleasure.

For I have bent Judah, My bow, Fitted the bow with Ephraim, And raised up your sons, O Zion, Against your sons, O Greece, And made you like the sword of a mighty man.”

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.

But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor.
