“Truly I know it is so, But how can a man be righteous before God?

“When they sin against You (for there is no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, and they take them captive to the land of the enemy, far or near;

O Lord God of Israel, You are righteous, for we are left as a remnant, as it is this day. Here we are before You, in our guilt, though no one can stand before You because of this!”

How then can man be righteous before God? Or how can he be pure who is born of a woman?

If even the moon does not shine, And the stars are not pure in His sight,

Then the wrath of Elihu, the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was aroused against Job; his wrath was aroused because he justified himself rather than God.

‘I am pure, without transgression; I am innocent, and there is no iniquity in me.

“For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, But God has taken away my justice;

‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker?

Then Job answered and said:

If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

Do not enter into judgment with Your servant, For in Your sight no one living is righteous.

Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
