“Why did I not die at birth? Why did I not perish when I came from the womb?

Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should nurse?

Let them be like a snail which melts away as it goes, Like a stillborn child of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

By You I have been upheld from birth; You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb. My praise shall be continually of You.

Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead, More than the living who are still alive.

Yet, better than both is he who has never existed, Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

If a man begets a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with goodness, or indeed he has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better than he—

Though it has not seen the sun or known anything, this has more rest than that man,

“Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, And all the remnant of the house of Israel, Who have been upheld by Me from birth, Who have been carried from the womb:

Woe is me, my mother, That you have borne me, A man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent for interest, Nor have men lent to me for interest. Every one of them curses me.

Because he did not kill me from the womb, That my mother might have been my grave, And her womb always enlarged with me.

Give them, O Lord— What will You give? Give them a miscarrying womb And dry breasts!
