“Oh, how Sheshach is taken! Oh, how the praise of the whole earth is seized! How Babylon has become desolate among the nations!

Why is the city of praise not deserted, the city of My joy?

The king spoke, saying, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?”

and wherever the children of men dwell, or the beasts of the field and the birds of the heaven, He has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all—you are this head of gold.

All the inhabitants of the isles will be astonished at you; Their kings will be greatly afraid, And their countenance will be troubled.

Babylon shall become a heap, A dwelling place for jackals, An astonishment and a hissing, Without an inhabitant.

At the noise of the taking of Babylon The earth trembles, And the cry is heard among the nations.

How the hammer of the whole earth has been cut apart and broken! How Babylon has become a desolation among the nations!

that you will take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say: “How the oppressor has ceased, The golden city ceased!

“And as for this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and say, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and this house?’

And you shall become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword among all nations where the Lord will drive you.
