In the city desolation is left, And the gate is stricken with destruction.

Wail, O gate! Cry, O city! All you of Philistia are dissolved; For smoke will come from the north, And no one will be alone in his appointed times.”

Because the palaces will be forsaken, The bustling city will be deserted. The forts and towers will become lairs forever, A joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks—

Though hail comes down on the forest, And the city is brought low in humiliation.

‘I will go before you And make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze And cut the bars of iron.

“I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a den of jackals. I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.”

How lonely sits the city That was full of people! How like a widow is she, Who was great among the nations! The princess among the provinces Has become a slave!

The roads to Zion mourn Because no one comes to the set feasts. All her gates are desolate; Her priests sigh, Her virgins are afflicted, And she is in bitterness.

Her gates have sunk into the ground; He has destroyed and broken her bars. Her king and her princes are among the nations; The Law is no more, And her prophets find no vision from the Lord.

Because of Mount Zion which is desolate, With foxes walking about on it.

For the inhabitant of Maroth pined for good, But disaster came down from the Lord To the gate of Jerusalem.

For her wounds are incurable. For it has come to Judah; It has come to the gate of My people— To Jerusalem.

But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
