Deuteronomy 24:13

New King James Version

You shall in any case return the pledge to him again when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his own garment and bless you; and it shall be righteousness to you before the Lord your God.

And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever; His horn will be exalted with honor.

“If you lend money to any of My people who are poor among you, you shall not be like a moneylender to him; you shall not charge him interest.

Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

If he has oppressed the poor and needy, Robbed by violence, Not restored the pledge, Lifted his eyes to the idols, Or committed abomination;

Has not oppressed anyone, Nor withheld a pledge, Nor robbed by violence, But has given his bread to the hungry And covered the naked with clothing;

If he has not oppressed anyone, But has restored to the debtor his pledge; Has robbed no one by violence, But has given his bread to the hungry And covered the naked with clothing;

if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

Therefore, O king, let my advice be acceptable to you; break off your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.”

They lie down by every altar on clothes taken in pledge, And drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.

“Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

And if the man is poor, you shall not keep his pledge overnight.

Each day you shall give him his wages, and not let the sun go down on it, for he is poor and has set his heart on it; lest he cry out against you to the Lord, and it be sin to you.

Then it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the Lord our God, as He has commanded us.’

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
