So Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was concerned about Absalom.

And King David longed to go to Absalom. For he had been comforted concerning Amnon, because he was dead.

And Joab sent to Tekoa and brought from there a wise woman, and said to her, “Please pretend to be a mourner, and put on mourning apparel; do not anoint yourself with oil, but act like a woman who has been mourning a long time for the dead.

Then the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept. And as he went, he said thus: “O my son Absalom—my son, my son Absalom—if only I had died in your place! O Absalom my son, my son!”

So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people. For the people heard it said that day, “The king is grieved for his son.”

But the king covered his face, and the king cried out with a loud voice, “O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!”

Now the three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab and Abishai and Asahel. And Asahel was as fleet of foot as a wild gazelle.

Now their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel—three.

Many seek the ruler’s favor, But justice for man comes from the Lord.
