So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them.

So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please, put your hand under my thigh,

And all his sons and all his daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, “For I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.

Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, “Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!”

And when all the people came to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, David took an oath, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else till the sun goes down!”

My heart is stricken and withered like grass, So that I forget to eat my bread.

Now the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; and no musicians were brought before him. Also his sleep went from him.

But he refused and said, “I will not eat.” So his servants, together with the woman, urged him; and he heeded their voice. Then he arose from the ground and sat on the bed.
