Now Adonijah was afraid of Solomon; so he arose, and went and took hold of the horns of the altar.

So all the guests who were with Adonijah were afraid, and arose, and each one went his way.

And it was told Solomon, saying, “Indeed Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon; for look, he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’ ”

Then news came to Joab, for Joab had defected to Adonijah, though he had not defected to Absalom. So Joab fled to the tabernacle of the Lord, and took hold of the horns of the altar.

God is the Lord, And He has given us light; Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.

“But if a man acts with premeditation against his neighbor, to kill him by treachery, you shall take him from My altar, that he may die.

You shall make its horns on its four corners; its horns shall be of one piece with it. And you shall overlay it with bronze.

And Aaron shall make atonement upon its horns once a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonement; once a year he shall make atonement upon it throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.”

He made its horns on its four corners; the horns were of one piece with it. And he overlaid it with bronze.

The altar hearth is four cubits high, with four horns extending upward from the hearth.
