For he who avenges blood remembers; he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.

This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles.

for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets, and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.”

And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.

See, the Lord is coming out of his dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose the blood shed on it; the earth will conceal its slain no longer.

For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.

Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer.

He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.

You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,

But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.

including the shedding of innocent blood. For he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the Lord was not willing to forgive.

And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them.

And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

The chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands; the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.

Remember the nation you purchased long ago, the people of your inheritance, whom you redeemed— Mount Zion, where you dwelt.

There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.

For the Lord has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling, saying,

Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.
