The arrogant have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path.

He says to himself, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees.”

He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The Lord does not see us; the Lord has forsaken the land.’ ”

They say, “The Lord does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.”

See what they spew from their mouths— the words from their lips are sharp as swords, and they think, “Who can hear us?”

Yet you say, ‘What does God know? Does he judge through such darkness?

they help each other and say to their companions, “Be strong!”

We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.

Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.”

The enemy boasted, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.’

The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.

And when God had me wander from my father’s household, I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.” ’ ”

But the Israelites encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day.
