His wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Have a pole set up, reaching to a height of fifty cubits, and ask the king in the morning to have Mordecai impaled on it. Then go with the king to the banquet and enjoy yourself.” This suggestion delighted Haman, and he had the pole set up.

So they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. Then the king’s fury subsided.

He will turn their own tongues against them and bring them to ruin; all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.

The trouble they cause recoils on them; their violence comes down on their own heads.

He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the Lord our God will destroy them.

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.

Evildoers are trapped by their sinful talk, and so the innocent escape trouble.

The mouths of fools are their undoing, and their lips are a snare to their very lives.

All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”

but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy, lest the adversary misunderstand and say, ‘Our hand has triumphed; the Lord has not done all this.’ ”
