The Lord swore an oath to David, a sure oath he will not revoke: “One of your own descendants I will place on your throne.

When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom.

The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.

“Now, Lord, the God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises you made to him when you said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants are careful in all they do to walk before me according to my law, as you have done.’

God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,

it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.”

Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness— and I will not lie to David—

but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.

“Now Lord, the God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises you made to him when you said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants are careful in all they do to walk before me faithfully as you have done.’

Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ”

I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.

He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

and said, ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor on my throne today.’ ”

I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with David your father when I said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor to rule over Israel.’

The heavens praise your wonders, Lord, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.
